think of America they often envision a powerful level of freedom and liberty. Benjamin Franklin once stated "Where liberty is, there is my country." Franklin lived in a time when
freedom and liberty was aggressively and successfully fought for, a time when the people of the land had struggled in many incredibly ways to gain freedom from Britain and their
own independence. It was a bright time of freedom and liberty to be sure. But, from colonial times to reconstruction there were many elements in society that could perhaps be
seen as less than liberating. The following paper examines this particular time period and discusses whether it was a time wherein a greater number of people enjoyed freedom and liberty.
Freedom and Liberty in History In colonial times and the time of the Revolutionary War it can be argued that the people were clearly fighting for freedom and
they won that freedom. They became a nation that was, in many respects, possessed of more freedom and liberty than any other nation in the world at the time. America
became a nation wherein people could say what they wanted and a nation where they could pursue their own lives, their own businesses, and their own religious beliefs. These were
not realities that were part of European society and as such more people, who had come to America surely enjoyed more freedoms than they had experienced in Europe. Benjamin
