filled with attempts to recapture what we felt had been taken from us and to overcome the oppressive attitudes of the government and other establishments that represented the loss of
freedom we so sorely believed was our problem at the time. There were many causes and many different groups who were involved in the changing of the way things had
become but few causes or groups were are dedicated and hard working as the Freedom Riders of 1960. The Freedom Riders were organized by the Congress
of Racial equality, which was also known as CORE. The reason the Freedom Riders formed was to test the effectiveness of the 1960 Supreme Court decision in Bognton versus Virginia.
This decision had to do with the segregation of races in public areas that served interstate travelers. Public rest stops had become a target for segregation. One of the
last areas other than education where the minorities were legally not allowed to use the facilities (History 424) . The decision was handed down but
there were rumors that the decision was not being obeyed. And in fact was being ignored at will especially in some of the more southern states(History 424) .
On May 4, 1961 a small group of many races decided to travel in two buses and challenge the fact that some of these southern states were ignoring the directive
o the Supreme Court of the United States of American(History 424). This group of CORE members were peaceful and non violent yet determined to prove e a point
and the only way to prove it was to actually travel and see for themselves as well as others if the directive was being obeyed or not(History 424).
