him, there are many who are opposed. Natale evaluates the sort of freedom outlined by Dostoevsky. He explains: "The Underground Man epitomizes fully exploited freedom within this fictive society dominated
by science and reason, yet not wholly based upon the two. He enjoys his freedom to the fullest: he suffers yet he enjoys suffering" (45). Natale remarks that with
freedom comes suffering as one sees the darker side of life (45). Not unlike the Garden of Eden story, perhaps it is better for man to live with blinders on.
Natale concludes that while that is the case, by living without freedom, some of human nature is lost (45). There are in fact many authors who believe that it is
important to embrace freedom in its entirety and not to give in to the idea that freedom can only lead to ruin. John Stuart Mills On Liberty for example conveys
almost the opposite point of view as Dostoevskys. Mill writes: "the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will,
is to prevent harm to others" (Mill). Thus, he does advocate freedom to a great extent, but not to the extent that it hurts others. A common example of restriction
on freedoms provided by the first amendment is that one cannot yell "fire" in a crowded theatre. Why? While people have freedom to say what they like, they cannot incite
a situation that puts others in danger. Therefore, according to Mill and most who write on the subject, liberty is important but individual freedom must not impinge on others rights.
