Several people are stuck on a deserted island with the likes of Captain Wolf Larsen, who some believe is crazy, but is really suffering from a brain tumor. Tolchinsky calls the man a "dictatorial sea captain" (412). Those words are rather gentle. Perhaps it is no accident that Jack London, famous for writing stories about dogs and wolves, named his ferocious character Wolf. In a struggle for survival there are some prominent characters and the poet Maud Brewster is on the scene along with the literary critic Humphrey Van Weyden. Not all of the survivors are intellectuals. There is an eclectic group and this sets the stage for many ideas to be broached. There are several external allusions in this piece as it was written in an era where many things were known by the general public. There are however ideas with which many people are unfamiliar today, but a student writing on this subject may want to note that London certainly keeps things in check.
