man upon birth relate to the authorship of men like Thomas Aquinas. Hick challenged the notion that man is born in a finished state, the product of a God who defined man by divine perfection at the time of birth. Others, including Aquinas, had argued that in the presence of Evil, mans choice of evil over goodness is a process from which man falls away from the perfection in which he was born. Hick challenges this by arguing instead that man is born in a state of imperfection, in an incomplete state, and that the development of his soul occurs as a process relative to the introduction of life. Hicks defends this by recognizing the difference between man created in the image of God and man created in the likeness of God. Man is not inherently good, as is assumed by the influence of God (Hick). Instead, man is simply born as a physical manifestation of the image of God, rather than an exact replica of God, including Gods goodness. As a result, the man who appears in Gods image is sent into the world in order to act purposefully as a part of humanity, and it is through this action that man defines himself as moral, good, and soulful (Hick). God has defined a purpose for humanity that is essential to mans formation as a soulful being. Hicks contends that man is essentially the raw material through which the image of God can strive towards a greater likeness of God.
