free speech. They may want to make a political statement either against the school board or society and sometimes the teachers want to join in. This restless political spirit is quite understandable under the circumstances. Schools are created so that children can learn and teachers often select their professions in order to be able to create a better world. Teacher salaries are not always competitive, and so, many educators view their role not just as a job, but also as a calling. Therefore, they do not just want to go along with school rules. They want to stimulate minds and do not want restrictions on their speech. Another issue that pertains to speech is related to religion. Religious people often want their particular brand of religion promoted in the schools, and others simply want the ability to speak about religion without being limited. Some want for example the Ten Commandments posted in schools because they say, it does not highlight one religion, but pertains to most mainstream religions. However, Atheists view all religion as negative. Even believers sometimes see the school as an improper venue for discussion of religion. They claim that they do not want their public schools telling the children how to think about religion at all. In addressing this issue, many have heard of the First Amendment which supports the separation of church and state and also supports freedom of speech. Yet, some schools which have not jumped on the PC bandwagon continue to have Christmas parties and only sprinkle in a bit about Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. Other schools go overboard and try to incorporate every conceivable holiday so as not to offend anyone through neglect. Still other school systems prohibit all religious activity.
