nation stand strong and one of the most important things regarding the structure of the nation itself. Without free speech the nation would not be what it is, supposedly a
land of free people who can say anything they desire and seek their own form of happiness. The existence of free speech is clearly something that applies to campuses across
the nation for it is on these campuses that new leaders are formed and new voting citizens are truly educated. The campuses of the nation are places of learning and
growth and expression. The following paper examines, and argues for, free speech zones on campuses. Free speech Zones on Campuses Free speech zones are places where students on
campuses can go and essentially say anything they want. They are given the freedom to express themselves however they see fit. Of course such zones are not zones where battles
can be fought aside from verbal battles. But, they are places where people can express their idea, exchange ideas, and argue for or against ideas without the threat of any
repercussions involved. The real notion of free speech zones on campuses can perhaps be traced back to the 1960s when many students felt strongly about many social and governmental
issues but were somewhat hindered in expressing their ideas. One author notes that, "Public universities were a hotbed of social activism in the late 1960s and early 1970s, with much
student energy focused on opposing the Vietnam War" (Hudson). This level of interest in various affairs was not quite evident in the 1980s but the 1990s brought back an urgency
