electrons "orbit" the nucleus. The Bohr atom posits these electrons as being part of a "shell." But no matter what model of the atom we choose, its basically protons-neutrons-electrons. When
one electron is ripped away from the outer shell, the atom becomes a free radical. The problem here is that these atoms can bond with other atoms in unexpected ways,
"causing a chemical reaction" (Free radicals). Oxygen free radicals are created because of the "myriad of complex chemical reactions that happen constantly inside our bodies" (Free radicals). During these
reactions, "oxygen breaks from larger molecules and reacts with certain compounds to produce oxygen free radicals. These unbalanced atoms then wildly seek electrons from other atoms to replace their own,
attacking normal cells and causing the chain reaction known as oxidation" (Free radicals). Free radicals may only exist for a fraction of a second, but even then "the damage
is irreversible" (Free radicals). Although free radicals exist at all times, normally they are present only in small numbers and the body can control them (Free radicals). However, if free
radicals are present in excessive numbers, "damage to cells and tissues can occur" (Free radicals). Free radicals cause the damage that occurs in the aging process (Free radicals). Free
radicals are found in such substances as "cigarette smoke, air pollution, pesticides, herbicides, and overexposure to the sun" among many others (Free radicals). Free radicals can "break vital bonds which
