renders it a nice sounding model, but truthfully, it has been suggested that free labor is quite negative. In exploring the history of the American Civil War the idea
of free labor in America during the 19th Century crops up. What was it essentially about? Dictionary.com describes the concept as follows: "the labor of freemen, as distinguished from that
of slaves." It does not sound very appealing. At the same time, this controversial movement has been perceived as very positive by some. Others however view free labor in a
negative light and even see slavery as a preferable model. Brownson (1840) writes the following: " In regard to labor, two systems obtain: one that of slave labor, the other
that of free labor. Of the two, the first is, in our judgment, except so far as the feelings are concerned, decidedly the least oppressive" (368). How the author comes
to this conclusion is rather curious. Again, many believe it is better to be free than to be enslaved. However the author goes on to explain that as a rule,
the suffering the slave must endure is less than those who are enslaved (1840, 368). Why? In respect to freedom, both the slave and freeman who work for nothing has
about the same amount (1840, 368). Interestingly, a bit later, Karl Marx would remark that the paid wage laborer is bound and there is an implication that those who work
in the capitalist system are enslaved. Under the free labor paradigm, which existed during the 1800s, one can see that there was actual free and slave labor that was perceived
as even more demeaning than working for minimum wage today. Brownson (1840) remarks in terms of free laborers is that the free man who works for no money
