and education was strictly controlled by his father who wanted and expected his son to become a great military commander. He was more interested in the arts than he was
in war and in this, he received support from his mother and his sister Wilhelmina.3 The King hated the Frederick IIs interest in the arts and any other intellectual pursuit.
He wanted his son to adopt his own puritanical and militaristic foci and became rigid and brutal in Fredericks upbringing. Frederick I took it out on Frederick II with public
criticism. He also beat Frederick II.4 At one point, Frederick II and a friend, Lieutenant Hans Hermann von Katte decided to run away.5 They were caught and the king had
von Katte executed in front of Frederick II who was imprisoned. For a period of time, it looked like the king might execute his own son.6 The conflict had begun
early in the sons life and continued until about 1733 when there was a partial reconciliation. At that time, he was married to Elizabeth Christine of Brunswick-Bevern. It was arranged
and Frederick II never loved her or cared about her in the least. Frederick William I died at the end of May in 1740. At that time, Frederick II ascended
to the throne. He was completely autocratic telling all the ministers that he himself would make decisions and he alone would decide policies.7 Despite his reluctance to learn warfare
