Discussion Frederick Douglass was a man of extraordinary intelligence and he knew that if slavery was to end, people had to be aware of its cruelty. Southerners were adept at giving the impression that slaves were "happy darkies," who loved their masters and were well-treated; the reality was ugly and brutal. In order to tell people what slavery was really like, Douglass wrote the story of his life, called The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave. In it, he told what slavery was really like; the whippings, starvation, poverty, indignity, women raped by their white masters and so on; he also, without realizing it, made himself something of a celebrity. A few words from his Narrative will tell us what slavery was like; it will also confirm that Douglass was a very talented writer. He says he has no accurate knowledge of his age since he had never seen a record of it, which was not unusual for a slave: "By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant1. Because he has no way of checking his age with any accuracy, and because his master deems him impertinent if he asks, Douglass stopped asking and estimated his age, which he thought to be between 27 and 28 when he wrote the book.2 He tells readers that his mother was Harriet Bailey, and that her skin was very dark; then he says "My father was a white man" and he believes that it might even be his master, but he ...
