be a concern for the Thompson campaign. Discussion Simply put, the reason Martin is a liability is that he has a criminal record for drug dealing. Candidate Thompson has been
using Martins private jet since early summer, 2007, to campaign around the country (Mosk et al, 2007). This is not a practice confined to Thompson; both Rudi Giuliani and Democratic
hopeful John Edwards use private planes belong to friends to get to various events. But Martin not only has a criminal record, he is a close personal friend of Thompsons.
In fact he was one of Thompsons earliest supporters and has been friends with him for nearly 20 years (Mosk et al, 2007). Using a private plane instead of flying
commercial saves the campaigns hundreds of thousands of dollars, but obviously there is a perceived conflict of interest because until a recent change in the law, candidates didnt have to
reimburse the owners of private planes at full rates, but only a fraction thereof (Mosk et al, 2007). Thus, Martin would have made his plane available to Thompson for much
less than its actual operating costs, which is not a trivial sum but a matter of thousands of dollars. Voters might well legitimately ask what kind of access Martin is
getting to the candidate for the significant contribution hes making. But even more troubling is Martins criminal record. He pled guilty to selling 11 pounds of marijuana in 1979 but
his judgment was withheld pending completion of probation (Mosk et al, 2007). (The way Mosk writes this it isnt clear whether Martin was on probation at the time he tried
to sell the pot, or if he was put on probation as a result of the attempted sale.) What is known is that Martin violated his probation in 1983 and
