different in their theoretical foundations. They all offered complex theories that were abstract and that are difficult for some novices to understand. In terms of psychological functioning, we would
look first to Freuds theory that the human personality is separated into three separate but equally important interacting components: the ego, the superego and the id. The Id represents the
humans most basic instincts and desires and it motivates people to satisfy these desires; the Ego, according to Freud, is partially conscious and partially unconscious. The ego is the mediator
between the Id and the Superego and helps guide a person to make rational decisions. The Superego is the ideal, it is the moral compass and tells an individual that
their base desires can be satisfied only through socially acceptable ways (Beystehner, 1998). The Superego is like ones conscious that is the source of guilt. Jung and Adler both broke
away from Freuds psychosexual theories but Freuds influence on each of them is apparent. Jung also said the psyche is comprised of three parts, which he called the ego, personal
unconscious, and the collective unconscious. The ego is the conscious mind; the personal unconscious is the unconscious mind; and the collective unconscious is psychic inheritance in that it holds memories
of experiences we have as the human species, it is knowledge that a person is born with (Boeree, 2006). The collective unconscious has an impact on behaviors but we are
not conscious of it. Jung referred to the knowledge in the collective unconscious as archetypes, which he described as memories or tendencies that are not directly learned (Boeree, 2006). Jung
