This description is, more or less, equivalent to the classroom demographics described by the student researching this topic in the assignment scenario, as this describes a diverse group of students who have different needs, cognitive levels and abilities. Dr. Jones points out that teaching would not be difficult if the students would simply "pay attention and get to work," and, particularly, stop "goofing off" (Jones 2). By "goofing off," Jones means talking, sharpening pencils, and also "doodling, dawdling and gazing out the window," that is, all the myriad activities that students engage in to keep themselves entertained (Jones 2). Basically, Dr. Jones consider the root problem to be that students are not "learning by doing," but are, rather, for the most part, "not doing," as they are expected in many classrooms to sit quietly, listen and, thereby, learn. Dr. Jones states that "If you were listening to monologues on this and that, it would be difficult for you to stay focused" (Dunne). Effective classroom management falls into three broad categories: instruction, discipline and motivation (Jones 17). In regards to each of these categories, he offers specific advice. For example, in regards to "instruction," he advises "working the crowd," which means that a teacher should not spend all of his or her time in front of the class but should put the students "to work and walk among the student as they supervise" (Jones 17). However, in order for the class to remain focused during such Guided Practice session and not become rowdy, teachers must help students to become "independent learners," rather than dependent on the teacher (Jones 19).
