unique props as well. These included a mop, a hat rack, dumbbells, golf clubs, firecrackers, even funhouse mirrors. He danced on the tops of bottle-stacked bars and pianos,
over furniture and, in a most memorable Royal Wedding number; he danced up the walls and across the ceiling. Combined with his evident flair, his obvious appeal and his
apparent charm, Fred Astaire was an undeniably awe-inspiring pioneer in dance with an astonishing ability to breathe original life into the heart of the American musical theater. Unlike those
who came before him and different from those who would follow, Astaire and his style clearly stood out for their constantly-creative, revolutionary appeal. He would do what others never
thought of and dance in manners seemingly impossible to his peers. Accordingly, few high-steppers have been lionized like Astaire. Through the movies, he became the populist image
of what dancing was all about. His glides, leaps and taps informed people, made it accessible. Credit is due to the talents of Astaire and to the influence of film
for if it were not for the latter, we may never have been able to see such revolutionary dance. Astaire was, after all, among the first in a generation
of dancers that would perform for the fairly new medium of film. And he was the very first to attack movies with vibrant special effects and routines that made
