II. It is the purpose of this paper to show that FDR became an American hero more because of his strategies of World War II than because of what
he did with his New Deal. THE NEW DEAL When Franklin Delano Roosevelt was elected in 1932, he promised a "new deal" for all Americans that would provide them
with security from "the cradle to the grave" (New Deal PG). Roosevelts New Deal proved to centralize and commercialize American politics, inasmuch as FDR established the presidency as a
primary point of both American politics and popular culture. Directly connected with the Age of Catastrophe, Roosevelts New Deal proved to impair any sort of forward movement. Having
begun with the First World War, which was an inter-imperialist struggle, The Age of Catastrophe faced its ultimate demise nearly thirty years later with a unattainable battle between progeny of
eighteenth-century Enlightenment, the great revolutions and its opponents. Roosevelts New Deal was to be the start of a new sort of security for Americans. "In many ways,
they present a mirror image of todays federal policy picture: their goals were clearly stated and democratic; they supported activities not already subsidized by private sector patrons, rather than following
private patrons leads; and they emphasized the interrelatedness of culture with all aspects of life, not the separateness of a rarefied art world" (Federal Cultural Programs PG).
