Waldo Emersons thinking and what he would say to six Louisiana politicians today; and how Walt Whitmans thinking compares to that of Emerson and Thoreau. Discussion Ben Franklin had a
great respect for the native people of the American continent. In an excerpt of one of his writings, the reader sees how Franklin uses sarcasm to praise the Natives and
castigate the whites; he uses satire in much the same way as Jonathan Swift. Its biting and ruthless, and very effective. Among other things, Franklin writes that we call them
savages "because their Manners differ from ours, which we think the Perfection of Civility; they think the same of theirs" (Franklin). He suggests that if we could "examine the Manners
of different nations with Impartiality, we should find no People so rude, as to be without any Rules of Politeness; nor any so polite, as not to have some Remains
of Rudeness" (Franklin). In other words, hes arguing that the Native Americans, taken on their own terms, are as civilized as the white man. He goes on to say that
when they are young, the Indians are warriors and hunters, and when they are old, they become counselors, with the result that there is no need of force, and that
means, in turn, there "are no Prisons, no Officers to compel Obedience, or inflict Punishment. Hence they generally study Oratory, the best Speaker having the most Influence" (Franklin). The women
tend the crops, plow the soil and raise the children, and remember what the men say; thus, the men and women are "natural and honourable" (Franklin). They have so few
