, Inc. by K. Von Huben 11/2010 Please Introduction Viktor Frankl wrote a book about his experiences in the
Nazi concentration camps that has become a classic, and a testament to the human spirit. But it also shows what survival entails; its not always as noble as it seems.
This paper touches on the book very briefly, then considers Frankls theory of logotherapy, and finally devises a case study to which it could be applied. Discussion Frankl writes that
its almost impossible for anyone to relate to a third party what it was like in the concentration camps; there is simply no way to comprehend that level of terror
or cruelty, or the things that the survivors did to stay alive. Frankl notes that the extreme hardship of life in the camps acted as its own kind of "selection"
mechanism (this being the term used to designate the way in which inmates were chosen for work or death); after a time, the only ones who survived the ordeal were
those who had "lost all scruples in their fight for existence; they were prepared to use every means, honest and otherwise ... in order to save themselves. We who have
come back ... we know: the best of us did not return" (Frankl, 1984, p. 19). This last sentence, "the best of us did not return," is a poignant and
