Using the topic of "Frankenstein" as a search criteria, this examination of the Internet demonstrates how the "wheat" can be discerned among the "chaff" that makes up the majority of Internet sites. among the "chaff" that makes up the majority of Internet sites. First of all, an experimental search was tried on the Google search engine, which took the direct approach
and simply used "Frankenstein" as the only keyword. This produced thousands of sites. On some search engines, sites can pay to have their sites listed first in response to
certain keywords. However, on other engines, the listings are prioritized according by different criteria, such as the most popular sites for certain keywords. Using the keyword "Frankenstein" produced immediate results
on Google. Near the top of the list is a site produced by the National Library of Medicine. This site offers four categories pertaining to the topic.
Clicking on any category links to a well-written, informative article that provides a comprehensive background on Mary Shelley, the novel and the famous film adaptations. This site exemplifies the criteria
for a good site: it loads quickly; it is easily readable and understandable; and it provides information. However, simply using "Frankenstein" as a keyword also produces many worthless
sites. Therefore, the search was narrowed by adding the word "book." With this search the electronic text center at the University of Virginia was near the top of the
list. This online database is open to the public and contains the texts of numerous books that are out of copyright, including the entire text of Mary Shelleys classic
