a rumor can change a persons life or their perceptions of life and a story that ultimately makes the reader think about what they may do in similar situation as
well. The following paper examines and analyzes the character of Frank in Updikes story. Frank: John Updikes "The Rumor" Frank appears
to be a relatively simple and perhaps stoic man who is married to perhaps an equally stoic woman. There seems to be no passion in their lives as they have
simply moved forward in their American Dream, involved in the art world, but still they were described as having "dry Mid-Western taste" which indicates they were clearly without true passion
about their lives (Updike). Then Franks wife, Sharon, hears a rumor about her husband. The rumor is that Frank ahs run away
with his homosexual lover. Sharon says she has heard the rumor from two sources and wonders why everyone believes this when Frank is still with her. She questions him and
this makes Frank curious, angry, confused, and somewhat victorious in confusing his wife. The rumor is, of course, not true, but still the rumor begins to make Frank think, and
he likes the fact that his wife is confused and thinking he is a homosexual. Frank takes advantage of her confusion and
is apparently more amorous and aggressive in their sex life, but still he is a stoic man overall. He begins to question himself, wondering why people would even think he
was a homosexual. But, he remembers his past, his youth, and how people often thought he may be a homosexual because of his handsome good looks and his body. He
