He possessed a "pioneering method for eliciting sensitive performances from his actors" and as such stands as one of the most powerful directors in the history of film, although many are not familiar with his work (UCLA Film and Television Archive, 2004). One of his most famous works is Moonrise, a film made in 1948. This film is considered by many to be one of his most classic as it showed Borzage returning to the romantic vision of his earlier films, his films that were created prior to the 40s. With this simple information in hand, the following paper examines some of the work of Borzage, while discussing how Moonrise is closer in style to the films of his early years than his later years. Early Films "While much of the writing on Frank Borzage will invariably argue that he is a neglected filmmaker, his cinema has not significantly lacked important critical commentary...yet Borzages cinema does remain perpetually unfashionable..Commentators on Borzage have argued that the directors sensibility is out of step with an emotionally distanced, post-modern culture, one more devoted to the supposed ironies of a Douglas Sirk or the wit and playfulness (amidst violence and melodrama) of an Alfred Hitchcock" (McElhaney, 2003). In such a light we see that Borzage was perhaps considered "old fashioned, devoted to pious and sentimental love stories.
