Mafia family, the Corleones, and all of the life which surrounds these people. We see the beginnings of this famous mob family from the childhood of the Godfather all
the way through until his death. Godfather III even goes beyond his death and reveals the new generation of this family and their experiences.
What is interesting throughout these films is the role which family plays. These roles are ever-changing and complex, and yet Coppola has the remarkable
ability to bring them to life slowly, subtly, and dramatically. Godfather I begins with the wedding of Connie who is
the Godfathers daughter. There is a huge celebration to commemorate the event and friend and family surround the newlyweds. It is a traditional Italian wedding with lots of
pomp and circumstance, and the family is all in attendance. What is interesting to note is the family relationships and
how tightly woven this family is. They laugh together, sing together, eat together and celebrate this joyous event together. A large family picture is even postponed when the
Godfather realizes that his son, Michael, has yet to arrive. He refuses to take the picture until Michael arrives. In this
opening scene people line up and wait for a moment alone with the Godfather. As it is revealed in the movie, the Godfather cannot deny a request on the
day of his daughters wedding. This outpouring of love, generosity, sincerity and respect is in such opposition to the means by which the Godfather makes his living.
