who are not religious, Francis seems to evoke feelings of love and peace. He was also considered to be a very powerful and well loved man of his time. In
the following paper we examine the man who was Francis Assisi and then discuss his importance in Catholic Europe. Assisi "Francis Assisi was born in Umbria in 1181
or 1182. He lived a life enjoying the good things available to him," for he was born to a wealthy merchant family (Kacsmar, 2002; francis.html). However, he quickly learned that
"he was not interested in the family business nor in learning. However, he was not licentious and would always give alms for the love of God."1 He is reported to
have "heard a voice telling him to serve God. He began to do this and was disowned by his father for taking some merchandise and selling it without permission."2 Francis
apparently took the money to do good but was ordered to return it to his father. "His good humor and desire to serve attracted followers. In his personal life
he battled mightily with temptations and lived a life of poverty."3 In fact, poverty was one of his primary teachings and was considered to be the key point to his
personal and preached rule. "To conquer the temptations he would undertake strict mortifications. He traveled to Egypt to convert the Saracens but was unsuccessful."4 When his particular order began
to grow incredibly large and began to change he became distressed and "grew spiritually by meditating on the crucifixion and was given the stigmata. Before his death, he blessed all
his brothers and exhorted them to love God, poverty and the Gospel."5 He died in 1226 and, as alluded to, "is the most widely acclaimed saint, even among those who
