the existing business (franchisor). The relationship between a franchisee and a franchisor is a unique type of relationship that is different from most business operations or collaborations.
The relationship is based on a collaboration that requires a level of mutual interdependence and shared expectations that requires careful planning (Nieman and Barber 1998, 129). Nieman and Barber
(1998, 129) cited Mendelsohns (1992, 143) three essential principles of respect related to the franchisor/franchisee relationship, which are: 1. Respect by both participants for the essential principles that are
identified in the franchise system of marking, which link the two to a system of commonality; 2. Respect by the franchisee for the information that is provided by the franchisor,
which can include, but is not limited to achievements of the existing operations, guidance in the operation of the franchise, and practical experiences that should inform operations. While the
franchisee may question or challenge the perspectives of the franchisor, he must respect the "ownership of the name, system know-how and practical experiences upon which the franchise is based and
all that such ownership implies." 3. Respect on the part of the franchisor for the role and contributions that the franchisee can make to the operational unit as a whole
