that stand a hundred years or more apart in history, yet they are both paintings that clearly depict a religious icon, a saint, which indicates a social focus and admiration
for saints. The following paper compares and contrasts, and describes, the two paintings. Francesca and El Greco The two paintings under
examination utilize different mediums. Francescos painting is oil on canvas (measuring 43 1/2 in. x 37 1/2 in.) while El Grecos is tempera on a poplar panel (measuring 52 3/4
in. x 24 1/2 in.). They are clearly very similar in size and from looking at the paintings, at least through photographs, the medium used does not appear to make
any significant difference in the appearance of the paintings. As for issues of patronage, El Grecos painting does not appear to have any patron, no individual or organization or
church who commissioned the piece, although it proved to be such a popular painting that it was reproduced by El Greco four more times (Flick [1], 2007). There is a
subtle gentleness to the figure, as well as perhaps a look that suggests being tired, but there is also a very powerful stern presentation in the emotions of the figure.
He is a fairly old man, and is the figure of "St. Jerome (c. 342-420), one of the four great Doctors of the Western Church, is venerated for his ascetic
piety and for his monumental Latin translation of the Bible, represented here by the large volume on which he rests his hands" (Flick [1], 2007). The lighting comes directly from
