dictum "the extreme right rises and falls with its leader" is no better proven than in a brief look at the Front National party of France and its leader Jean-Marie
Le Pen. This party and its leader have been described by more than one critic as "anti-establishment", "sharp tongued", and "far right" (Cuperus, 2004; Simons, 1996). Never-the-less, it
has managed to achieve considerable attention on the political stage. The degree of this attention, has varied over time. It has indeed fluctuated in direct association with its
leader. The importance of Le Pens in his partys strenth, in fact, is reflected by the fact that the party is often referred to as the "Le Pens Party"
rather than by its more formal name, the "Front National". The "Front National" has mostly been a relatively obscure party thoughout
much of its history. With the rise of Jean-Marie Le Pen in particular, however, the Party has recently reached unprecedented heights in the political arena. The dictume that
Frances far right rises and falls with its leader is indeed factual. At Le Pens height of popularity so too was the "Front National" party at its height of
its popularity. Cuperus (2004, 17), however, observes that although the success of right-winged populist parties such as Le Pens:
"has ebbed over time-and especially after their failing performances in government-their impact on intellectual discourse and the political-cultural climate of Europe remains"
