the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, the infamous one of 1789 inspired a great deal of revulsioni. However, in the end, according to a student, liberty would emerge as an
important ideal. The student also mentions the Paris Commune of 1871 as being relevant to the discussion. Clearly, in delving back into French history, there was one bloody revolution,
the one that came at the end of the eighteenth century, but that was not the end of it. There would be a loss of control by monarchy, the desire
for an enlightened monarchy, the Napoleonic era, and finally attempts at democracy that have ruled France ever since. Still, the people never desired, and did not get, something that has
the same freedoms of the United States of America for instance. Rather, a socialist ideal has remained the lifeblood of the people who arguably stormed the Bastille because of an
untoward remark by Maria Antoinette. In any event, these battles were significant. The theme that runs through France is a sense of a divide. There are the rich and poor,
and the voices of the poor speak loud and clear, which is something that saw the 1789 movement to fruition. But the sense of poverty lived on. In the early
twentieth century, there was a significant depression and French farmers were hit hardii. One can see by an evolution of events that there are different ideals of liberty spouted by
the French people as compared with ideals for instance embraced by Americans. A fundamental difference is that Americans rejected monarchy entirely where the French people wanted an enlightened monarchy. The
French have a socialist ideal and one that goes to equity. For Americans, equity is reached with opportunities, and not with goods alone. The Dreyfus Affair also in some way
