A 7 page paper discussing the advantages and disadvantages of membership in the European Union for these two countries, emphasizing the first few months of euro trading. Luxembourg never has been large enough either in size or wealth to be considered as a 'power' of Europe, but like the businessman who finds a niche and fills it, Luxembourg appears to be poised to gather great gains from EU membership. France has other issues with which to deal. The national ideology is so different from much of the rest of Europe that France likely will have difficulties adjusting, but the promise of greater economic prosperity will make any necessary transition less painful for them. the larger goal. Great Britain has chosen to remain outside the EU for issues of sovereignty, and former Eastern bloc nations have not attained the economic stability required for
membership. France and Luxembourg were among those nations joining in the first wave, however. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages in
EU membership, but both still stand to gain from the association. France As have many
of the other European nations in the 1990s, France has struggled for much of the decade with high unemployment and sliding economic growth. The events have had little if
anything at all to do with the formation of the European Union and the planned conversion of member nations currencies to the euro, but France, as others, has had high
hopes for the benefits of membership in the European Union. There are disadvantages for the nation, however. Historically, France has held
the most pronounced socialist bent of all the European nations that were not formerly under communist rule before the fall of the Soviet Union. While Great Britain and others
have some socialist policies, they have not adopted a widespread socialist view as has France. The socialist perspective suits the French politicians and people, who routinely elect socialist leaders
