out Ukrainian nationalism. The famine affected the Ukraine itself, the northern Caucasus and the lower Volga between 1932 and 1933 and was accompanied by purges of the Ukrainian community, especially
intellectuals and Communist party officials. It left the area socially and politically devastated. Collectivisation had not had a positive impact on productivity, but in spite of this the quotas required
from the Ukraine region were raised in 1932 to levels which it was impossible to meet without creating famine amongst the people, since quotas had to be paid before the
farmers were allowed to take grain for themselves. The regime used troops and police to collect the quotas, and those who attempted to save grain for their families were executed
or deported. The aim was to crush any possibility of
rebellion by Ukrainian nationalism, and to establish the Partys absolute authority. In this, the policy was successful, since the violence and attrition left the Ukrainians defeated, deprived of basic resources,
and unable to stand against Stalin. The Nazi death camps grew
out of Hitlers stated aim to restore greatness to Germany after the humiliation inflicted by the Treaty of Versailles, and the weaknesses of the Weimar Republic. He publicly attributed Germanys
social and economic problems to the presence of minority groups in the country, promulgated Aryan superiority, and used propaganda, troops and the political machinery of a one-party state in order
