practically every aspect of our lives. When the potential for abuse exists, however, the ethics of the situation become much more disturbing. The adult learning environment has just
this potential. Unfortunately, no uniform code of ethics exists for the professionals that occupy this field. The intent of this paper is to explore this situation, to provide
a basic framework of why a code of ethics should be developed in adult education, and how, when and by whom such a code would be used. Concerns surrounding
the implementation of codes of ethics will be discussed. A discussion will be provided as to the anticipated reactions to such a code from educators and as to the
overall effect the code will likely have on the adult educational setting as a whole. The move toward developing a professional code of
ethics in adult education is not that surprising. Ethics come into play in many of the decisions we make in life. This is true of both personal decisions
and decisions we might make as a group as a component of our professional or societal responsibilities. Likewise, there are many possibilities for ethical code violations in practically every
aspect of our lives. Ethics of practice is, in fact, a popular topic of discussion within the field (Sork, 2001).
Numerous adult education professionals have argued for the development and implementation of a code of ethics within the field (Sork, 2001). They contend that this establishment is one of
