paper examines this piece of art and discusses form as well as context and history. Fragment of the Ur-Nammu Stele As
mentioned this piece, this fragment, is a piece of a larger sculpture. According to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2010) "It was probably dedicated by the king Ur-Namma. He represents
himself as the rightful heir to the whole of Southern Mesopotamia by proclaiming himself "King of Sumer and Akkad." It is from a piece of work that stood ten feet
high. It comes from around ca. 2097-2080 B.C and measures 105cm high, 71.8cm wide, and 11cm thick. According to the Journal of the American Oriental Society the piece was first
discovered in the 1920s in the midst of a sacred precinct (Winter, 2003). In relationship to why it was made it is
noted that "Ur-Namma was a great builder" and "Restoring the huge temples of his cities was, after all, a way to assert his political legitimacy" (Metropolitan Museum of Art, 2010).
As is perhaps often the case in ancient history, the leader controlled the sculptural figures that were erected for egotistical reasons and so one can assume that the same would
be true of Ur-Nammu. At the same time such monuments were also built, and sculpted, with gods in mind and as such they were erected to honor the gods. One
