Van Lines (FVL) specializes in the transport of household goods. The company works in cooperation with the larger motor carrier American Van Lines (AVL). As opposed to operating
strictly in the Southeast AVL operates over a forty-eight state range. It utilizes the services of smaller companies like FVL to complement its own services. FVL, however, is
currently considering expanding its own operation. To do so it would need to rely on AVL in a way that AVL has relied on it in the past.
While AVL is well equipped to operate within a smaller geographic area it is considering expanding to a larger geographic area and using AVL to provide services in areas where
FVL equipment or resources is lacking. This presents a number of considerations in regard to the existing and proposed alliance between AVL and FVL as well as in regard
to specifics such as information system needs and management requirements, sales and marketing, whether to consider intermodal shipping expansion, and equipment maintenance and fueling.
The resources that will be required in this proposed expansion will be directly dependent on the extent of the expansion. If FVL decides to go with intermodal shipping, for
example, they will have to lease or buy shipping containers that are suitable for transport between all the different modes of transport. These containers must be suitable not only
for the type of van-based shipping FVL currently is involved in but also suitable for train and ocean transport. Needless to say, whether FVL considers leasing or purchasing intermodal
