international law that governs business transactions has had to grow more complex and nuanced to keep up. Problems tend to arise, however, when matters of international business law also concern
ethical issues. For instance, certain cultures have rules and prohibitions on child labor, while others have a more accepting and lax view of this phenomenon. A recent article published on
CNet, by D. Reisinger explores a recent instance in which international business law was violated in a way that was also ethically problematic. The article in particular concerns itself
with Foxconn, which is a corporation based in China that manufacturers circuit boards, chips, and general electronic equipment that is frequently used in high end consumer goods manufactured in the
United States. If one owns a contemporary smartphone or computer, chances are good that Foxconn was responsible for manufacturing at least some of the internal components. Because of the companys
reputation, people were shocked when it was revealed that the company had violated international business law by employing interns younger than the legal age at which one can work in
China (Reisinger, 2012). In China, international business law dictates that one cannot work until one is sixteen years of age, but in the case of Foxconn, they had hired interns
as young as fourteen. Interestingly, this is not only a violation of Chinese labor law, but also a violation of the companys own internal policies, suggesting that somewhere along the
line, someone knowingly decided to purposely break the law (Reisinger, 2012). Something that makes this story particularly problematic is the fact that this is not Foxconns first incident running afoul
