emerging practice of the use hypertonic saline nasal irrigation (HSNI) for people who suffer from frequent sinusitis and chronic sinonasal symptoms. This study is a qualitative analysis, meaning that
it utilizes interviews and narrative perspectives on the benefits, rather than statistical representations. Rabago et al (2006) identified four major themes that extended from their qualitative analysis of
the content of 28 participant interviews: HSNI improved self-management of their symptoms; HSNI improved quality of life; HSNI resulted in discomfort and side effects that limited
its utility; Participants benefited from training and at-home use methods that reduced these noted barriers (Rabago et al, 2006). These researchers identified the problem of rhinosinusitis and chronic sinonasal
symptoms as problematic and expensive in terms of overall healthcare costs, resulting in billions of dollars in direct costs in emergency rooms each year. These researchers maintained that the
use of HSNI could reduce the number of office visits and improve symptoms, empowering patients with methods for self-care and reducing the need for healthcare services.
The qualitative content analysis used in this study found some similar themes that were identified in these structured interviews. The researchers recognized that one of the problems with using
HSNI was that it was difficult for individuals to do at home, and many required treatment in a doctors office. As a result, instruction in the use of HSNI
in the home setting was valuable in changing perspectives identified in the interviews. The researchers maintained that both HSNI and the use of training to support home use
of HSNI were beneficial. At the same time, the researchers also maintained the need to continue the study of HSNI, including assessments of the clinical protocol, the optimal training
