functions were universal, i.e., applied to all managers. Over the years, Fayols ideas were modified and today, we typically identify four functions: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. Planning is
essential to an organizations success. Planning includes the organizations vision, mission, and goals. It is about what the organization is going to do and how they are going to do
it. A number of different steps are incorporated into the planning process, including an assessment of where the company is and what the market is at the time of planning;
it also includes forecasting where the market will go in the near and far future. Organizing involves preparations the managers make to implement the plan. it is about who
is going to do what and when they will accomplish that task or project (Barnett, 2006). Organizing also involves determining who will report to whom and who will direct or
supervise each department or unit (Barnett. 2006). This is the function that establishes the structure of the organization so that an environment that promotes high performance is established (Barnett. 2006).
All managers must control certain things. Finances must be controlled, for example, so that the organization operates both efficiently and effectively (Allen and Gilmore 2007). In competitive marketplaces, quality must
be controlled so that products and services meet certain standards (Allen and Gilmore 2007). As Fayol himself said, we should "not be confused with behavioral or manipulative sense" (Barnett, 2006).
