are based on what is occurring in the material world, while true self-transformation is likely associated with a spiritual breakthrough that goes above and beyond the ordinary. In recognizing
potentials for self-transformation along with the possibilities of breaking from traditional views, what might Michel Foucault add to the subject matter? Foucault is a twentieth century thinker, although he did
not live to witness the great transformations in communication practices associated with the Internet. Still, he did live to see the birth of the personal computer and witnessed the sexual
revolution of the 1960s. Much of this philosophers attention was turned to institutions like marriage and the prison system. He was also very interested in sexuality and the function of
it in society. Foucault did seem to see self-transformation as important. Writing and "doing philosophy" are vehicle of self-transformation for Foucault (McLaren, 2002). For this theorist, people come to their
own conclusions, and this journey is a part of the transformation of the self. Foucault does not discuss any form of consciousness-raising in his works and he also was not
enamored of psychotherapy (McLaren, 2002). In fact, Foucault was very critical of psychiatry. For this theorist, doing analysis is a solitary journey. The idea that one always wakes up alone,
and will die alone, or as Jon Kabat Zinn puts it "wherever you go, there you are," is a very important concept. At the end of the day, all anyone
