After all, the field of psychology suggests that attachments are formed with primary caregivers during the first weeks and months of life. If children do not have such close relationships available, or have them but they are ripped away, attachments will be less easily accomplished. These early attachments are thought to be important for all people and it sets the stage for how life will be for an individual. While that is the case, much will depend upon the individual personality of the child. Attachment does refer to those close, significant affective bonds that are developed throughout the life span (Ainsworth, 1973 as cited in Haight, Kagle, Doner & Black, 2003 ). The empirical research does confirm what various theoretical perspectives have shown which is that attachment relationships are needed for the proper development of children (see Zeanah, Mammen, & Lieberman, 1993 as cited in Haight, Kagle, Doner & Black, 2003 ). Attachment relationships that are formed during the first three years of life especially will have an influence on the childs expectations in terms of interpersonal relationships ; however, many young children now enter foster care and remain for long periods of time (Downs, Costin, & McFadden, 1996 as cited in Haight, Kagle, Doner & Black, 2003 ). This tends to place emerging attachment relationships at risk (2003). It is true that children in foster care, or who are wards of the state, may suffer. At the same time, children who do begin their lives in foster care may in fact form primary attachment relationships with foster parents (2003).
