Approach to Management Leadership / influencing employees: Southwest Airlines was founded in Dallas in Rollin King and Herb Kelleher, a now-legendary CEO. (Unfortunately, it appears that the story of him handing out beverages on an Easter Sunday flight dressed in a bunny suit is apocryphal.) They started with three airplanes and a simple idea: "If you get your passengers to their destinations when they want to get there, on time, at the lowest possible fares, and make darn sure they have a good time doing it, people will fly your airline" (We werent just airborne yesterday, 2004). Southwest identified its mission from the first, and has stuck to it. It flies point-to-point (not hub-to-hub), mostly short or medium-haul flights, and uses the same airplane (737) on all of its routes. It determined from the first what kind of service it would offer and what kind of equipment it would use, and its never varied from that. Its consistency has given it real strength. Southwest has turned a profit every year for the last 31 years, including 2001. When other airlines went bankrupt, Southwest managed to get through the downturn caused by the terrorist attack without downsizing, cutting back on its flights, underfunding its pension scheme or laying off a single employee (Kelleher, Parker and Barrett, 2002).
