In Edgar Allan Poes 1846 short story, The Cask of Amontillado, a murder takes place out of sheer revenge with little to no forgiveness at
all from the killer. In fact, the murderer, Montresor, who vows revenge at the beginning of the story, leaves the victim, Fortunato, hanging from chains in some damp catacombs for
nearly 50 years, but no investigation takes place and no motive is ever revealed. The reader can easily picture these damp catacombs under a river bed with water trickling down
and how settings like this have been used by Gothic authors for some time. Plus, the fact that this man was plotting revenge also gives the reader a sense of
dark, amoral qualities among the main characters that is often represented in Gothic literature. In fact, all that is stated is "the thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as
I best could, but when he ventured upon insult, I vowed revenge" (Poe, para. 1). The reader obviously does not know what those thousand injuries are, nor is it revealed,
but he or she can assume that enough harm was invoked for Montresor to meticulously plot the murder as he does in the story. Or, the reader can also assume
