in South Carolina and Fort Pickens in Florida -- the federal garrisons refused to surrender their positions to Southern state troops (Lufkin, 2002). Subsequently, the Civil War began in April
of 1861 as shots were fired on Fort Sumter; however, the war could have easily begun three months earlier at Fort Pickens in Pensacola, Florida (Lufkin, 2002). Prior to
the succession of both Florida and Alabama, the governors of these states issued orders to seize the federal forts and arsenals located within their respective borders (Lufkin, 2002). Alabama Governor
Andrew B. Moore sent state troops to occupy Forts Gaines and Morgan; however, he was also concerned about the fate of nearby Fort Pickens (Lufkin, 2002). Moore commented that "no
other place on the Gulf is safe while the federal troops hold possession of the commanding fortifications at Pensacola" (Lufkin, 2002). Therefore, Moore responded quickly when Florida Governor Madison Perry
requested troops and arms from Alabama to aid Florida (Lufkin, 2002). Commanded by Colonel Tennent Lomax, five companies of the 2nd Alabama Regiment left for Florida on January 9th
(Lufkin, 2002). Also, Florida troops were dispatched from Tallahassee. These troops were under the command of 64-year-old Colonel William H. Chase, a retired US Army officer who had supervised the
construction of Fort Pickens (Lufkin, 2002). In January of 1861, the Federal military presence in Pensacola was minimal, consisting of small detachment stationed at Fort Barrancas and the navy
yard; only a sergeant and his wife as caretakers at Fort McRee; and Fort Pickens was not garrisoned at all (Johnson, 2002). The men of Company G, 1st US
