character. Her story takes her from childhood to a happy ending that is far different from any ending she could have imagined. As a character who goes through many changes it is all but inevitable that she go through levels of forgiveness as she develops into a more caring and deep character. The following paper examines Janes development as she progresses through stages of forgiveness. Jane and Forgiveness In the beginning of the novel we see Jane as a young girl who is understandably resentful of her family which consists of her aunt, nephew, and niece. "If they did not love me, in fact, as little did I love them. They were not bound to regard with affection a thing that could not sympathise with one amongst them; a heterogeneous thing, opposed to them in temperament, in capacity, in propensities; a useless thing" (Bronte). She was a girl who vowed, when she left that house, never to call that woman aunt again, never to care what she thought. Years later, after she had lived away for some time she returned when her aunt was dying. This was a very powerful move on her part, part of her journey of forgiveness and development of character. She was able to see, more objectively, the struggles of her aunt and the sad state of her aunt, thus giving her the ability to be kind and compassionate and no longer bear any grudges: "Love me, then, or hate me, as you will, I said at last, you have my full and free forgiveness: ask now for Gods, and be at peace" (Bronte).
