use foreshadowing, which is a way of giving a reader a hint of what might be coming, for a number of reasons. Often they want to build suspense, and foreshadowing
tells the reader that something is coming, often something dangerous or frightful that the characters cannot escape. When that happens, the reader sometimes experiences a shared sense of danger with
the characters; when that happens, the reader is "hooked" and is more likely to finish the book than if he or she doesnt care whats going on. But sometimes writers
want to mislead readers and keep them guessing. Clues that point in the wrong direction are known as "red hearings" and are found in a lot of mysteries. Foreshadowing, whether
it heralds danger, romance or is a method of distraction, adds drama and impact to a story by instilling in the reader a sense of anticipation: we want to know
what happens next. Its even more effective when the reader has information the characters do not; we know whats down in that basement or around the bend. In Two Cities,
Dickens uses a great deal of foreshadowing, and it starts with the very first line. "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the
age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity..." (Dickens 6). Dickens gives his reader a catalog of
