criminal investigations have become progressively more advanced over time. Many aspects of modern criminal investigation are highly dependent on the latest discoveries in science and technology. DNA analysis,
for example, has come to occupy and more and more prominent role in criminal investigations. Technology involving DNA has many more far reaching applications than proving the guilt of
murder and rape suspects. It can even have more applications than proving misconduct in the case of public figures such as the President of the United States. In
fact, DNA evidence can be useful even in the case of the non-human aspects of a crime or situation. The presence of biological materials such as bodily fluids associated
with the perpetrators body can be used to solve a crime and to legally convict the person or person who is responsible. So too, however, can biological material such
as tree bark or even the body parts of a poached animal. The utilization of such complex information is facilitated, however, by advances in other technological aspects of criminal
investigations. One of the most important of these advances is found in our growing dependence on computers in criminal investigation. To
understand the growing importance of computers in criminal investigation consider the practically limitless applications of DNA evidence alone. Small bits of biological material can now be linked to one
species or another and even to specific individuals within a species. The applications of this technology far exceed our preconceived ideas about matching blood or other bodily fluids found
at a crime scene to the perpetrator, however. A tree, for example, which is sideswiped in a hit and run could provide vital evidence to the careful investigator who
