characters are a woman named Mary Ellen "Mel" Madden, and a man named Cody Rosewater, with whom she becomes involved. A cast of characters of approximately equal importance moves around
these two, but a third important character is Sweet Ass Sue, who runs the Pingo Palace, the only bar in town. Mels character is strong, independent, courageous and audacious; she
survives in Alaska by hunting, an unusual occupation for a woman, to say the least. Cody is an ex-hippie who ditched San Francisco for life in Alaska; hes more in
love with Alaska than with Mel; in fact, when they split up he realizes that its the country that is his true love. Sweet-Ass Sue is another strong woman, at
least on the outside, but she has to deal with the fact that her husband, the love of her life, keeled over and died at the Olympic try-outs. She is
strong but hollow. Cellini: In the context of the book, an "invention" is a fabrication, rather than a mechanical device. When Cody compares a knife to the work of Cellini,
its an invention because its a comparison that no one would ever think of making; it makes no sense. Benvenuto Cellini was a 16th century Italian artist and sculptor who
was famed, among other things, for his goldsmithing. His exquisite work is world-famous, but Cody prefers the work of Aaron Pursley, "who created clasp knifes of cherrywood inlaid with brass
engravings" (Foreman, 2007, p. 57). The comparison of a hunting knife and a work of 16th century Italian fine art is ridiculous, but we learn that Cody doesnt like fine
art because he thinks its "elitist" (Foreman, 2007, p. 57). Thus, Cody is someone who, in that awful phrase, "knows what he likes." Unfortunately, hes also bought into the myth
