on the English football game is something of a vexed question, since it can be approached from a number of different perspectives. On the one hand, one might reasonably assert
that with the breaking-down of national boundaries which accompanies increased globalisation, it is no longer realistic to expect that national teams will be populated entirely, or even mostly, by individuals
from that particular nation. In a small country like England,
where the pool of potential new players which can be drawn on is comparatively limited, it would also be fair to argue that the national team should not have to
confine itself to using only English players, when other countries do not have the same parameters. However, once it becomes acceptable to include players from all over the world in
a national team, how far can such a team still be considered "national"? In addition, it has long been acknowledged that the game is played with different attitudes and motivations
in different countries: does including numerous foreign players in the English team mean that its characteristic "Englishness" will thereby be lost?
One might take the view that if success is the important criterion, then the composition of
the team matters less than its competence - a team composed entirely of foreign players, provided it played under the English "banner" and brought success to England, would be preferable
