American involvement in Vietnam has had a long and complex history. The question of why the US was in Vietnam
after France left requires a long and complex explanation. As has been the case at more than one point in American history, we gauged our decision to enter Vietnam
in accordance with our own historical experience and ideology. We had yet to learn that that experience and ideology had little application in this culturally and politically multifaceted region.
In addition, the US had only recently proven her military capability in the capability in World War II. We hadnt learned in our involvement in Korea that we
werent always assured of triumph. This apparently was particularly true in Indochina but that was a lesson that still needed to be learned. The thesis can be presented,
however, that US failure in the Vietnam War, unfortunately, failed to have any long lasting impact on American foreign policy. At this very moment, our country is making the
