version of Andrew Lloyd Webbers fantastic stage hit The Phantom of the Opera is such a work. Discussion Its likely that many of the people who went to see the film did so because they were already "in love" with the play, which is now the longest running musical in history. The story, of the tormented, disfigured genius who hides in the cellars of the Paris Opera House, and his love for the soprano Christine, is one for the ages. But the 2004 film is far from the first version of the story captured by the camera, and yet its the one many people find absolutely compelling. Of course it took its fair share of critical knocks, many of them from male critics who simply didnt "get it"; but the Phantom touched many viewers so deeply it hasnt let go. The credit for that has to go, first and foremost, to Gerard Butler in the title role. Although hes famous now for his brutally effective turn as King Leonidas in 300, its probably fair to say that this is the role that really kicked his career into high gear. Many critics have been scathing in their remarks about Butlers singing and to be honest, hes not an operatic singer-his background is in rock. But he trained for a year and his voice, if not the quality of a Pavarotti, is nevertheless evocative and haunting, an instrument that he uses convincingly to portray the Phantoms power, rage, anguish, love and loneliness. Butlers performance is heartbreaking (many audiences were crying by the end of the film, praying he would somehow find happiness with his Christine); its one of the most powerful portrayals ever captured on film, and should have earned Butler an Academy Award nomination.
