literature from the 20th century. The following paper provides something of an annotated bibliography on Hemingways work. For Whom the Bell Tolls This particular book was published in 1940
though the novel takes place in 1937. Although there are many different publications of this novel, the novel is generally about 480 pages long. In terms of reading level this
book is perhaps well suited for a literature class in high school, and clearly a novel that is used in higher education quite often. It is a novel that
takes place during the Spanish Civil War in Spain. It is a novel about one man, Jordan, an Amercan, who wants to fight. He gets himself immersed in warfare and
struggles in the hopes that his efforts will make a difference for the people. The Thesis: Analysis Hemingway presents the reader with a hero, a simple, or relatively
simple, American not unlike Hemingway himself who also traveled to the region during the time in which the story takes place. He is presenting this young man, Jordan, as a
man with ideals, a man with hopes, and a man who hopes he can help make a difference in a world of war. Hemingway, having seen the Spanish Civil War
and WWI, was a man affected by warfare and a man who is known for writing about the Lost Generation, the men and women who were lost following WWI. His
character Jordan, however, is, unlike many of Hemingways other characters in novels, actively involved in making a difference, somehow. Interestingly enough, a great deal of Hemingways work is considered
to be perhaps too pessimistic, too dark, too narrow, and too unenlightened. His focus on this Lost Generation, which many see as a group of whining individuals who never try
