Therefore, it stands to reason that by examining the nature of food in a society, one may understand certain truths about that society. For instance, the distribution of food between social classes, as well as the quality of food available, reveal a great deal about the political and social realities of a given society. This paper will explore the presence of food in Italy during the 15th century, as a means of revealing social and political dimensions of that society. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore the concept of the sociological import of food in greater detail. To be sure, the importance of food in a sociological context has not been overlooked by scholars. To this day, the study of food and its distribution remains an important part of social studies pedagogy, and can help students to understand critical historical issues such as industrialization and the shift from a nomadic society to one based on the establishment of permanent cities (Resor, 2010). Adopting a tighter view of the role of food in society reveals that food choices are often an issue of social class division; for instance, "the upper class looks at food preferences in a competitive way" (Gustafsson & Draper, 2009). However, this sociological dimension of food is immensely variable; if "the lower class begins eating food usually preferred by the upper class, then the upper class will change in order to differentiate themselves from the lower class" (Gustafsson & Draper, 2009). Such trends were apparent in Renaissance Italy during the 15th century.
