In Ernest Hemingways novel The Sun Also Rises the role of foods and drink may be seen as all of these. The use of food and drink may be seen in the way that consumption is indicated through the book. Characters are consumed by their circumstances in the same way that sustenance is consumed and broken down into its component parts for digestion. The use of drink is more potent that that of food, with the use of alcohol is seen as both a cause and a symptom of the society depicted and the impact is a refuge and escape from the life the characters lead. To understand the way that food and more importantly drink, is used within the book a small background knowledge is required to place the events and values into a relevant context. This book was published in the decade after the First World War and Hemingway was still in his twenties at then time. Therefore, we can also argue that their may have still be a source of naivety within his psyche which he has not yet lost. The book did not reach as high a level of commercial success as further books such as Farewell to Arms, but has the same themes of loss. The major theme of The Sun Also Rises, like many books of the time can be seen as the message that war consumes and destroys. The destruction extends further than simply the lives lost on the battle field and the physical devastation that results form such conflicts. Hemingway looks at the way that it destroys life. ...
